Kevin's Day as a Special Lady

On February 26th, our resort hosted the 9th annual FDO Golf Tournament. Each year there are more men than women who sign up for this event. Teams are randomly assigned with a man and woman on each team.

When this tournament first started, some men were chosen to play from the women's tees and were called "special ladies". This has evolved over the years to quite the spectacle. These guys are great sports and dress up as ladies in golf attire during the day and evening wear for the dinner. Dave, who runs the tournament, has been teasing Kevin for the past two years that his turn was coming to be a special lady. Well, this was the year. The Thursday before the tournament, there is a draw party where everyone finds out who their partners are.  Here's Kevin sporting his tiara after he was chosen.

And here are all eight guys who were chosen this year.

The draw is Thursday afternoon. That only gives these guys and their wives until Saturday morning to get their outfits planned. Luckily, this has been going on for several years, so there are lots of wigs, outfits and accessories to be found throughout the park. We spent a few hours on Friday gathering stuff from friends and it all came together. I golfed at 8 am on Saturday, and Kevin was in the 10:30 group. So, our friend Cynthia took over and got him ready.

Here he is before and after she did his hair and makeup. She said he has great skin and plump lips, lol!!

Here are a few photos from his golf group. His partner was Craig. I had just finished my round. At 8 am it was quite cold and windy, so I'm bundled up and wind blown.

The format is a two person scramble, but you go out in teams of four. Here are our two teams.

I took a few pictures of Kevin playing from our patio.

We got him ready for the evening dinner banquet. There was a competition for Miss Fortuna 2022. Todd, in the blue dress, won hands down. All of the guys did a great job. There were door prizes, and I won a bottle of wine. The whole day is about having a good time and meeting new people. The prize for the best score was a sleeve of three golf balls.

It was a a great day and evening. I laughed so much my cheeks were hurting!!

In other golf news, I won a prize in the ladies club tournament. It is 18 holes played on two consecutive Thursday mornings. A few weeks prior to the tournament, I had taken a fairway woods lesson, and my game was improving. All the stars and planets aligned for me during this tournament. I shot a 96 for the 18 holes with a 36 handicap. As you can tell from my handicap, I played much better than normal. That gave me a net score of 60 which earned me the net champion for the year. My picture will be on display in the clubhouse. Wow!!! Here I am with the winner of the gross score, Gloria. She won it last year, too.

Those of you who have golfed with me know that I have never been a very good golfer. This will probably never happen again. Since we play so much more here than we ever did before, my game has improved. But, not to the point where I ever thought I'd be a champion of anything. As the saying goes, even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes.

We continue to enjoy many other activities here at the resort, including our Friday night potluck New Kids on the Block group. Lots of good food, great company, side splitting laughter, wonderful friends and a few adult beverages combine to make these evenings fantastic.

Our resort has almost daily live musical entertainment. On March 4th, we were supposed to have a music on the green concert on the chipping practice area of our golf course. Well, 25 plus mile per hour winds moved that concert into the community hall. As you can see by our smiling faces, we had a great time.

This past Saturday we revived our block party idea of two years ago. Just a few weeks before Covid shut everything down in March of 2020, we had our first block party with the critter racing games and musical entertainment. It was a huge success. Two years later, we were finally able to have the 2nd annual critter race block party. We had about 70 people from our street. Everyone brought a dish to share and lots of quarters to bet on the critters.

Everett was our leader. He got things started by having everyone sing the American and Canadian National anthems. It seemed very fitting in this time of world crisis. Then the festivities began.

Kevin and Ken were the critter movers. There was a tarp with a grid of 6 lanes. Each lane had a critter. Large dice were thrown to determine which critter moved and how many spaces. The first one to move exactly 13 spaces was the winner. The audience bought playing cards from ace through six for a quarter each. If your number won, you got a payout of $1.50. The number 2 critter, Old Blue, was very lucky and won more than one race. I think everyone had a great time. The party wrapped up just before 4 pm because another concert on the green had been scheduled for Saturday. This time the weather cooperated.

The band played on the back patio of the golf clubhouse. The side patio was the dance floor. People brought their chairs, drinks and snacks to the grass chipping practice area to enjoy the music.

So, as you can see we continue to be busy and enjoy life here in Yuma. Most snowbirds leave at the end of March, so things are slowly starting to wind down. Our kids Korey and Cathryn are coming to visit on the 19th, so we're very much looking forward to that. This will be their first time visiting us here.
